Nickel (commodity)

Nickel as a sought material, won from two entirely different kinds of system: magmatic sulfide accumulations and lateritic weathering profiles.

A rock specimen with vivid apple-green mineral coating and filling fractures in a brown weathered host.
Garnierite from New Caledonia — the bright green hydrous magnesium-nickel silicate that carries the nickel in the hydrous silicate subtype of laterite deposit. The USGS laterite compilation marks minerals as nickel-bearing or not, deposit by deposit, and garnierite is the one it marks for the silicate subtype. This is a specimen, not a deposit: it shows the ore mineral, not the profile that concentrates it. Locality: Camp des Sapins, New Caledonia.

Figures

A vertical column of five coloured bands labelled from lateritic soil at the top through ferruginous laterite, clay zone and saprolite to fresh ultramafic bedrock.
SchematicA schematic weathering profile on ultramafic rock, drawn from the layer names the USGS laterite compilation records for the deposits Lithoen holds — saprolite, ferruginous laterite, argillaceous saprolite, weathered serpentinite — and from the model’s account of what the weathering does. Nickel is not added to the profile: it is left behind as magnesium and silicon are removed. The diagram has no scale and no thickness, and it is not any particular deposit.
