Deposit

Talvivaara

Also known as Talvivaara Ni-Zn-Cu-Co deposit

A large, low-grade nickel-zinc-copper-cobalt deposit in black shales of eastern Finland, discovered in 1977. The Geological Survey of Finland reports that the resource was found to be large but of relatively low grade, and that bio-heap leaching was later found to be a suitable method to work it.

What this record is, and who says so

Recognised on the basis of

Geological survey publication

A report or map published by a national or regional geological survey.

A deposit is an occurrence of sufficient size and grade that it might, under the most favourable circumstances, be considered to have economic potential. Lithoen records that a named authority made that judgement. It is not a statement that anything here is recoverable, and it is not a resource or a reserve.

Commodities documented here

  • Cobalt (commodity) named among the deposit's metals; the volume gives it no separate grade or output.

  • Nickel (commodity) the principal metal of the operation as the volume describes it.

Where it is

Lithoen holds no coordinate for Talvivaara. The Fennoscandian metallogeny volume locates it by naming a metallogenic area and by figures, which is not a coordinate; reading one off a published map figure would manufacture a precision the source does not carry.

Establishedmetal-rich carbonaceous (graphitic) sediments in the Kainuu belt, without a hydrothermal metal signature

Reported for this deposit

The Geological Survey of Finland places Talvivaara in the Palaeoproterozoic Kainuu supracrustal belt and reports its mineralisation in association with sulphide- and metal-rich carbonaceous, now graphitic, sediments. The volume also records what the ore does NOT show: metal ratios with no tendency towards high values, unlike typical sea-floor hydrothermal or sediment-hosted copper systems, and an absence of the positive europium anomalies that would indicate a hydrothermal metal contribution.

  • assertion basis: SOURCE_REPORTED
  • definition basis: Host association and geochemical indicators as printed in the volume; the europium and metal-ratio observations are attributed there to unpublished data by Kontinen.
  • locality: The Talvivaara metallogenic area, Kainuu belt, eastern Finland.
  • assumption: The absence of a hydrothermal signature is what the volume reports about these indicators, and is not a settled genetic conclusion. Part of it rests on data the volume itself marks unpublished.

Establishedrecognised as a deposit by the joint Fennoscandian geological surveys in Special Paper 53

Reported for this deposit

Lithoen records Talvivaara as a deposit because the Geological Survey of Finland's Fennoscandian metallogeny volume, prepared jointly by the geological surveys of Norway, Sweden, Finland and northwest Russia, treats it as one — described with its discovery year, its resource character and its production history. The recognition is the surveys' own.

  • assertion basis: SOURCE_REPORTED
  • definition basis: Treatment as a named deposit in a national geological survey volume.
  • locality: Talvivaara, eastern Finland.
  • assumption: Recognition as a deposit is a geological judgement by a survey and is not a statement that the deposit is economic.

Open question

Reported for this deposit

Lithoen holds no coordinate for Talvivaara. The Fennoscandian metallogeny volume locates it by naming a metallogenic area and by figures, which is not a coordinate; reading one off a published map figure would manufacture a precision the source does not carry.

  • assertion basis: SOURCE_REPORTED
  • definition basis: What the source provides by way of location: a named area and map figures.
  • locality: Talvivaara, eastern Finland.
  • assumption: Absence of a coordinate here is a limit of this source and this corpus, not a statement that the position is unknown to anyone.

Establishedbio-heap leaching found suitable where conventional extraction was not

Reported for this deposit

At Talvivaara the process decided the deposit rather than the reverse. The Geological Survey of Finland reports that the resource was found to be large but of relatively low grade and that conventional metal extraction techniques were judged unsuitable at the time, and that bio-heap leaching was later found to be a suitable method to operate this sulphide deposit — after which first metals were produced in October 2008 and full production followed in 2010, with a planned annual output of approximately 50,000 tonnes of nickel.

  • assertion basis: SOURCE_REPORTED
  • definition basis: The volume's account of why the route changed and what followed.
  • temporal basis: As stated in a 2012 publication. Nothing here describes the operation's state after that date, and this corpus holds no later source for it.
  • locality: Talvivaara, eastern Finland.
  • assumption: A planned annual production is not an achieved one. This records what a 2012 survey volume reported about a plan and an early operating period, and it is not a statement about the operation today.

Open question

Reported for this deposit

Lithoen holds no mineral-system interpretation for Talvivaara. The volume places it in a named metallogenic area with a described geological setting, but this corpus holds no mineral-system entity matching that setting, and coining one from a single case would create a class out of an instance.

  • assertion basis: SOURCE_REPORTED
  • definition basis: The absence of a matching mineral-system entity in this corpus, recorded rather than left silent.
  • locality: Talvivaara, eastern Finland.
  • assumption: A statement about Lithoen's coverage, not about the state of knowledge.
