Also known as Mountain building

Mountain building. Not a single mechanism but a family of them: collision, subduction-related uplift, crustal shortening and thrusting, magmatic addition, and extensional fault-block uplift can each raise topography.

What Lithoen records

Each claim states how it is known and cites its evidence.

EstablishedCollision, subduction-related uplift and crustal thickening are distinct mountain-building mechanisms.

Mountains are raised by more than one mechanism: continental collision buckles and thickens crust, subduction lifts the overriding plate and builds volcanic ranges, and the crustal roots beneath large ranges record thickening as well as uplift.
