Oxidation

The loss of electrons by an element on exposure to oxygen. In rocks it converts ferrous iron to ferric, which is far less soluble, and fixes it as oxide.

What Lithoen records

Each claim states how it is known and cites its evidence.

InferredFe2+ to Fe3+; the ferric product is retained as oxide.

Oxidation converts ferrous iron to ferric, which is far less soluble, so iron released by weathering is fixed in place as ferric oxide rather than carried away in solution.

  • method: Combines the ferric composition of hematite with the cited account of chemical weathering by rainwater; no retrieved source states the solubility contrast directly.
  • precision note: Lithoen holds no Tier A or B source stating the relative solubilities, and the claim is marked inferred rather than established for that reason.

Evidence support: Supported by the cited evidence 2 sources, multiple sources, independence unknown

Evidence: Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification, International Mineralogical Association 2026 Primary authority; British Geological Survey n.d. Primary authority
