Scientific method

Optical petrography

Also known as Thin-section petrography

Examination of a rock thinned to about thirty micrometres under a polarising microscope. It is the one method in this set that observes the rock directly, and it reads texture — the record of how minerals grew in relation to one another — which no bulk analysis can recover.
