Liquid metal infiltration

Also known as pressure infiltration, squeeze casting

A liquid-state route in which molten matrix metal is forced or drawn into a porous preform of the reinforcement. The metal becomes the matrix without reacting to form it, which distinguishes it from reactive melt infiltration.

What Lithoen records

Each claim states how it is known and cites its evidence.

EstablishedAluminium-based composites, near-net shape, many reinforcement types.

Infiltration is used to make aluminium-based composites, shows little chemical interaction between reinforcement and matrix, and can make near-net-shape parts with a variety of reinforcements; squeeze casting has been used, for example, for carbon-fibre-reinforced aluminium.

EstablishedResidual porosity and reinforcement-rich regions.

Infiltrated metal-matrix composites may retain some porosity and regions where the reinforcement is aggregated.

EstablishedMolten matrix metal infiltrated into a porous reinforcement preform, with or without pressure.

In liquid metal infiltration the matrix metal is melted and introduced as a liquid into a porous preform that holds the reinforcement, either under pressure — squeeze casting is pressure-assisted infiltration — or without it; the metal becomes the matrix as it solidifies.

Established790–810 degC

For non-pressure infiltration of silicon carbide particle preforms by aluminium alloy under a nitrogen atmosphere, a review cites infiltration temperatures of 790–810 °C, depending on the thickness of the SiC powder bed.

  • conditions: Non-pressure infiltration of SiC-particle preforms by aluminium alloy ingots under nitrogen, as cited by the review from a primary study it references.
  • precision note: A figure the review reports from one cited study; it is a condition for that system, not a general infiltration temperature.
