Tellnes ilmenite concentrate

Also known as standard Tellnes ilmenite concentrate

The ilmenite concentrate produced from Tellnes ore, which the Geological Survey of Finland reports as containing 44 to 45 per cent TiO2 — below the 52.8 per cent of stoichiometric ilmenite, for reasons that lie in the ore's mineralogy rather than in the plant. A concentrate is an upgraded mixture, not a refined chemical.

Established0.8 to 0.9 Mt/y of ilmenite concentrate; used for sulphate-process titanium pigment and for Fe-Ti slag and pig iron

Reported for this deposit

The Geological Survey of Finland reports production of 0.8 to 0.9 million tonnes of ilmenite concentrate at Tellnes, equivalent to 6 to 7 weight per cent of total world production of titanium minerals by TiO2 content, and names two uses for the ilmenite: titanium pigment by the sulphate process, and ferro-titanium slag with pig iron.

  • assertion basis: SOURCE_REPORTED
  • definition basis: Output and named uses as stated in the survey volume.
  • temporal basis: The volume is of 2012 and reports tonnage mined to 2008; the production rate is as of that publication and is not a current figure.
  • locality: The Tellnes operation, southwestern Norway.
  • assumption: A named use is not evidence that any particular tonne went to it, and the volume gives no plant, no recovery and no split between the two uses.

Evidence support: Supported by the cited evidence one source
