Silicon carbide fibre
Also known as SiC fibre, SiC fiber
Small-diameter ceramic fibre of silicon carbide, made in stoichiometric and carbon-rich types that differ in high-temperature behaviour. It is the reinforcement of SiC/SiC composites.

EstablishedStoichiometric and carbon-rich SiC fibres differ in high-temperature behaviour.
Small-diameter silicon carbide fibres were available during NASA’s EPM programme in a stoichiometric type (Sylramic) and a carbon-rich type (Hi-Nicalon); the carbon-rich fibre’s non-stoichiometry, lower process temperature and carbon-rich surface gave lower thermal conductivity, thermal stability, creep resistance and environmental durability.
- temporal basis: As of NASA’s Enabling Propulsion Materials programme, reported in 2002; the range of commercial SiC fibres has changed since.
