Deposit

Korsnäs

Also known as Korsnäs Pb-REE deposit

A lead and rare-earth deposit in westernmost Finland, described by the Geological Survey of Finland as unique: hosted by a large north-trending calcite-diopside-barite-fluorite-allanite vein, or a carbonatite dyke, cutting Svecofennian mica gneisses. Mined between 1959 and 1972 for lead, with allanite and other rare-earth minerals making it prospective for rare earths as well.

What this record is, and who says so

Recognised on the basis of

Geological survey publication

A report or map published by a national or regional geological survey.

A deposit is an occurrence of sufficient size and grade that it might, under the most favourable circumstances, be considered to have economic potential. Lithoen records that a named authority made that judgement. It is not a statement that anything here is recoverable, and it is not a resource or a reserve.

Commodities documented here

Where it is

Lithoen holds no coordinate for Korsnäs. The Fennoscandian metallogeny volume locates it by naming a metallogenic area and by figures, which is not a coordinate; reading one off a published map figure would manufacture a precision the source does not carry.

Establishedrecognised as a deposit by the joint Fennoscandian geological surveys in Special Paper 53

Reported for this deposit

Lithoen records Korsnäs as a deposit because the Geological Survey of Finland's Fennoscandian metallogeny volume, prepared jointly by the geological surveys of Norway, Sweden, Finland and northwest Russia, treats it as one — described as a unique deposit with its host vein named, its mining period given and its ore tonnage and lead grade reported. The recognition is the surveys' own.

  • assertion basis: SOURCE_REPORTED
  • definition basis: Treatment as a named deposit in a national geological survey volume.
  • locality: Korsnäs, westernmost Finland.
  • assumption: Recognition as a deposit is a geological judgement by a survey and is not a statement that the deposit is economic.

Establisheda calcite-diopside-barite-fluorite-allanite vein, or carbonatite dyke, cutting Svecofennian mica gneiss

Reported for this deposit

The Geological Survey of Finland describes Korsnäs as hosted by a large, north-trending calcite-diopside-barite-fluorite-allanite vein — or a carbonatite dyke — that cuts the local Svecofennian mica gneisses, and names allanite among the rare-earth minerals that made the deposit prospective for rare earths alongside its lead. The volume calls the deposit unique and notes unexploited carbonate veins or dykes 1 to 20 metres wide in its immediate vicinity.

  • assertion basis: SOURCE_REPORTED
  • definition basis: Host description as printed in the volume, citing Isokangas 1978 and Papunen and Lindsjö 1972.
  • locality: Korsnäs, westernmost Finland.
  • assumption: The volume itself leaves the vein-versus-carbonatite-dyke question open, and that openness is preserved rather than resolved here.

Open question

Reported for this deposit

Lithoen holds no coordinate for Korsnäs. The Fennoscandian metallogeny volume locates it by naming a metallogenic area and by figures, which is not a coordinate; reading one off a published map figure would manufacture a precision the source does not carry.

  • assertion basis: SOURCE_REPORTED
  • definition basis: What the source provides by way of location: a named area and map figures.
  • locality: Korsnäs, westernmost Finland.
  • assumption: Absence of a coordinate here is a limit of this source and this corpus, not a statement that the position is unknown to anyone.

Establisheda pilot-scale rare-earth concentrate; 0.83 per cent RE2O3 in the ore

Reported for this deposit

The rare-earth concentrate reported for Korsnäs was made at PILOT scale. The Geological Survey of Finland states that during the pilot production of a rare-earth concentrate the ore proved to contain 0.83 per cent rare-earth oxides, in a deposit mined between 1959 and 1972 for lead at 3.6 per cent across 0.87 million tonnes. A pilot concentrate is a demonstration that a concentrate can be made; the volume describes no separation of individual rare-earth oxides, and none is recorded.

  • assertion basis: SOURCE_REPORTED
  • definition basis: The volume's own word for the scale: pilot production. The rare-earth grade is what that pilot established about the ore.
  • temporal basis: The mine worked 1959 to 1972; the volume is of 2012.
  • locality: Korsnäs, westernmost Finland.
  • assumption: Pilot scale is not commercial scale, and a concentrate is not a separated oxide. Nothing here establishes that individual rare-earth oxides were ever produced from this material.

Open question

Reported for this deposit

Lithoen holds no mineral-system interpretation for Korsnäs. The volume places it in a named metallogenic area with a described geological setting, but this corpus holds no mineral-system entity matching that setting, and coining one from a single case would create a class out of an instance.

  • assertion basis: SOURCE_REPORTED
  • definition basis: The absence of a matching mineral-system entity in this corpus, recorded rather than left silent.
  • locality: Korsnäs, westernmost Finland.
  • assumption: A statement about Lithoen's coverage, not about the state of knowledge.
