Material

Gallium arsenide wafer

Also known as GaAs wafer

A compound-semiconductor wafer made from gallium arsenide, which the U.S. Geological Survey reports as being used to manufacture integrated circuits and optoelectronic devices including laser diodes, light-emitting diodes, photodetectors and solar cells. An advanced material: its value rests on meeting device requirements, not on its gallium content.

Establishedcompound semiconductor wafers for integrated circuits and optoelectronic devices

Reported for this deposit

A property of a dataset or model, shown here for context — not an observation about this record.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports that gallium arsenide is used to manufacture compound semiconductor wafers used in integrated circuits and optoelectronic devices — laser diodes, light-emitting diodes, photodetectors and solar cells — and that about 83 per cent of gallium consumed in the United States was in gallium arsenide, gallium nitride and gallium phosphide wafers. The use attaches to the wafer, not to the element: nothing here says a device could be built from gallium metal.

  • assertion basis: SOURCE_REPORTED
  • generality: DATASET_PROPERTY
  • definition basis: A use the survey states for the compound and its wafers, at United States consumption scope.
  • temporal basis: Consumption shares as reported for 2024.
  • assumption: Consumption shares are United States figures and are not world figures.
